Dual Sprinkler Head Installation Explanatioin

In the above aerial photo of hole number two the current location of the irrigation sprinklers are marked by dots.  The yellow dots and the sprinkler coverage circle surrounding them indicate the present location of sprinklers that are designated to water the green.  The red dots and the sprinkler coverage circles surrounding them indicate the location of sprinklers that are designated to water the rough and the blue dots and circle indicate the location of sprinklers designated to water the fairway approach.

As you can see the uniformity and spacing of the sprinklers are excellent and if the entire area required the same irrigation there would be no issue.  The challenge is that within a very small area we are managing three very different turf areas.  Here is a short description of each area:
  • Greens are providence creeping bent grass mowed at less than 1/10th of an inch on a daily basis.  The greens were built to USGA specifications and are growing on a 12 inch plus base of 90 % sand and 10% peat mixture.
  • Fairway approaches are penn eagle creeping bent grass mowed at 4/10ths of an inch, three to four times per week.  They are growing on a 1" sand cap on top of very heavy dense clay loam soils.
  • The Rough areas are kentucky blue grass mowed twice per week at 2.5 inches.  They grow on heavy clay loam soils.
In addition to the physical differences in these areas described above we are also challenged to provide healthy, firm playing surfaces on greens and approaches while maintaining healthy, dense rough surrounds.  Here are a few examples of the challenges we face:
  • USGA greens should be irrigated with "Drenching" type cycles that brings the system to field capacity and then should be allowed to dry out for several days.  This is virtually impossible with our current single head system and would result in extremely wet approaches and surrounds.
  • Tournament Prep.  On those occasion where we would like to ramp up conditions for special events by firming up surfaces to a greater degree the single head system limits our ability to dry out playing surfaces like greens and approaches while maintaining healthy thick rough areas surrounding the greens as well as providing enough moisture to the bunkers to keep them firm.
As a result we are forced to manage surfaces to a compromise between desired moisture levels for each, usually resulting in greens and approaches being wetter than we would like.

In the above photo I have indicated the location of the new dual head system that also includes a third head in the front of the greens where necessary to provide separate irrigation of the green, the approach and the rough surrounds.

The irrigation distribution circle surrounding the three new sprinklers has be divided into the appropriate areas (the blue head waters the approach only, the red head waters rough and the bunker only and the yellow head waters the green only).  This improvement will allow us to manage these three very different turf areas individually and will result in improved turf health, improved playing conditions and improved efficiency in labor required to hand water.

I would appreciate any question or concerns you may have concerning this project... please contact me at chris.coen@glenoakscc.com.

Projects Continue

Thanks to day light savings time we are having to give it up quite a bit earlier.  Pictured above is the fairway drainage work that continues this week on holes 13 and 15.

Oops!  Despite our best efforts, we managed to break a 4" main line while adding drainage on 13.  "It happens".

Irrigation work surrounding greens continues.  Work is complete on the driving range greens and on holes 1 - 3.  Holes 4 and 5 will be completed this week.  The front nine will be completed this fall and we plan to wrap up the back nine next spring.

A very productive week for the course maintenance Staff!

Drainage improvements were completed on fairways seven and eight.  Nine approach was also started and is 75% complete.  Over 800 yards of tile were installed.  Trenching was completed using a specialised tractor mounted that conveys soil spoils into a tender trailer.  Trench are six inches wide and over 30 inches deep.  Four inch perferated tile was installed on the bottom of trench.  The tile was then back filled with pea rock and a sand cap of six inches.  Sod that had been removed prior to trenching was then replace to complete the process.

We plan to continue with drainage improvements this fall and will begin irrigation improvements as well.

Pictured above is the process of adding pea rock to the trench after the tile has been installed.

Dealing with a HISTORIC HEAT WAVE!

Leaf blowers have been used to promote air flow as seen here on 17 green.
We are also using industrial fans to keep air moving across green surfaces with poor air flow like 15 green.

Cooling turf surfaces with short irrigation cycles (usually one minute per station or less) is method used to relieve heat stress on the plant.

Greens are vented using needle tine aeration to promote positive air, water and nutrient movement through the surface.

Another very busy and productive week for our staff.  Here are just a few things that were accomplished this past week:
  1. Greens were vertical mowed and sand topdressed and are recovering nicely following spring aeration.
  2. Tees and fairways were also vertical mowed.
  3. Sod work was completed in several areas where plant materials were removed last fall including holes 10, 15, 17.
  4. The large mulch bed along the cart path on number one was removed and will be regrassed next week to alleviate mulch washing away during every rain event.
  5. Drainage work on 7 and nine tee was nearly completed.
  6. Overgrowth of invasive plant materials was removed surrounding 8 pond and will be treated to improve the aesthetics of the small wet land pond.
  7. Numerous other small projects were also completed including irrigation head leveling repair and leveling areas where stumps were removed last fall.
Check out our fairway verticuting process at http://youtu.be/itN7LdMGu_U.  Removing excess thatch through vertical mowing helps to promote healthy turf and firmer playing surfaces!

Bunkers will get a lot of attention this next week:
  1. Sand will be added.
  2. Drainage will be repaired where needed.
  3. Damaged grass faces will be repaired.
  4. Edging will be completed.
Hope everyone has a great weekend please take a moment to view our newly posted videos in the "How to" section.  Justin and I prepared our own video on the correct way to repair ball marks and replace divots.

See you all on the course!

It going to busy week! Storm damage repairs and greens aeration to complete. We received a total of 3 inches of rain Saturday night in a very short period of time. We had some fairly significant tree damage and the heavy rain washed out most bunkers and left silt and debris along the watershed at 15 green, 17 green and 4 tee area. Rest assured our staff will be working hard this week to get repairs made and greens aerated. Here are a few picture of the storm damage from Saturday night.

The day that we have all been waiting is fast approaching the beginning of the 2012 golf Season!  We have been busy this week making preparations for an extremely early opening on Friday, March 7th.  The covers are off and the greens look good, the course has wintered well, so ready or not here we go!

There are a few items that I would like to make you all aware of regarding the early course opening:
  • Tee markers are being refurbished by the manufacturer and will not be available for the start of the season.  We expect the markers to be here around the 20th of March.  Please use the front portion of the tee box of your choice.  In the past we have place markers for the Green, White, White/Yellow and the Yellow course.  This season we will place markers for the Black, Green, White, Blue, and Yellow course.  The Blue course will replace the yellow/white combo course and will be only slightly longer.  The Black course will be available as well for those who would like to play from the tips.  We hope that having five different courses available will help to make better use of existing tees and give our membership the opportunity to play the course that suits them best.  Thanks for you patients as we wait the arrival of our tee markers.
  • Please help us limit unnecessary damage to the golf course as the turf is not able to recover naturally until ground temperature rise enough for growth to begin.
    • Please keep carts on the path only and avoid driving on turf along the path
    • RELACE Divots
      • Replace all turf possible from divots taken from any area.
      • Press replaced turf into void firmly with your foot.
      • Fill remaining voids with divot mix on FAIRWAYS and TEES only.
    • Repair Ball Marks using the Pinch Pro tool available in the golf shop.
    • Please use Mats only on the driving range tee.
We look forward to seeing you all on the course very soon!

Winter Equipment Maintenance

Each winter extensive preventative maintenance work is done to assure mowers will be ready for the season ahead.  In the picture above Andy Berry, Chris Horton, and Cody Holmes are busy completely rebuilding the cutting units for our fairway mowers.  Cutting reels and roller bearings and seals are replace each winter.  New bed knives are installed and sharpened along with the reels.  Our staff rebuilds over 30 cutting units each winter.

Snow! We need the moisture!

I know that we have all been enjoying this incredibly mild winter, but we really needed some kind of precipitation.  Our staff has be busy over the last couple of weeks hauling water to vulnerable areas on the golf course.  Newly seeded and sodded areas along with exposed knobs on greens, tees and bunker faces have been watered.

Open winters can lead to winter dessication damage as soil surfaces dry and the lack of snow cover leaves the turf exposed to wind and cold temperatures.  So if you have some newly seeded or sodded areas in your lawn, you may want to get some water to them if this dry spell continues.  But remember to drain your hose and disconnect it from your outlet to avoid causing a water line break.

So I hope you all will forgive me for saying "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!"
